This year, Milwaukee is not going to deal top prospects like Matt Gamel and Alcides Escobar for high-priced free-agents to be, even if it's badly needed pitching they can acquire in return. Doug Melvin, who giddly said "We're going for it!" last year, has certainly changed his tone regarding a blockbuster deal.

Sabathia still Yankees' top target

If you were wondering whether the Yankees still held out hope that CC Sabathia might be playing in New York, here's the answer. GM Brian Cashman made his first priority at the Las Vegas winter meets visiting face-to-face with Sabathia to learn the pitcher's interest in playing for the Yankees. A six-year, $140-million offer would seem to prove the Yankees are interested in him.

If Cashman believes that Sabathia simply doesn't want to play for the Yankees, he could shift his attention swiftly to first baseman Mark Teixeira, whom Cashman met last Thursday in the Washington, D.C. area.

Although Cashman has emphasized the team's need for pitching this offseason, it seems the Yankees are going to let themselves get outbid by Atlanta for A.J. Burnett. And Derek Lowe is not close to signing with anyone.

A California native and resident, Sabathia would prefer playing in his home state, as well as the National League; he enjoyed hitting during his brief time with the Brewers. But neither the Dodgers nor the Giants appear to have the payroll space, and the Angels are prioritizing Teixeira.

I think Sabathia is going to end up in Southern California. Just a hunch. The Dodgers will probably have to get creative to get it done.

CC you in Milwaukee?

The Brewers will go after CC Sabathia this offseason, contrary to many reports saying they had no chance to sign the free agent pitcher. Money is not the only motivating factor for Sabathia, and he seemed to enjoy playing in Milwaukee.

Yankees 2009 staff considerations

MLB Trade Rumors dug up the latest on the Yankees offseason plans, including the possibility that they bring back both Mike Mussina and Andy Pettitte.

I imagine the Yankees will scrap the plan to sign two of C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Derek Lowe if both Mussina and Pettitte return. Or perhaps they'd turn Pettitte away?

Funny, but it was my expectation that the Yankees only bring back Pettitte or Mussina and not both. Things haven't worked out well in the Bronx in recent seasons, and an aging pitching staff can't be counted on to continue to produce at a high level. The Yankees need to get a bit younger with their veteran pitchers, because their young pitchers (Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, etc.) are still works in progress.
